UTM (United Transformation Movement) has announced it will not attend the launch of the Saulos Klaus Chilima Foundation scheduled for tonight at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, where President Lazarus Chakwera has been invited as the guest of honor.
The party, led by Dalitso Kabambe, explained that the decision is in response to the unresolved grief over the tragic airplane crash last year that claimed the lives of their former vice president, Saulos Chilima, and others.
During a press briefing on Monday in Lilongwe’s Area 49, Kabambe said the party could not share a platform with the current government leadership.
He questioned how the party could do so when there are still unanswered questions about the crash and the current leadership’s failure to provide clarity.
"How do we share the platform with those who owe Malawians the truth?" Kabambe said.
He,however, emphasized that the boycott was not a protest against the foundation itself but against the invitation extended to President Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Despite the boycott, UTM has pledged a K10 million donation to support the foundation’s work in honoring Saulos Chilima’s legacy and continuing his mission.
