Musician to bail Mangochi DHO
Namadingo offers to fix grounded ambulances
By Kondwani L Nyondo
Musician and philanthropist Patience Namadingo has pledged to repair a fleet of non-functional ambulances grounded at Mangochi District Health Office.
However, health rights activists including George Jobe have said the images raise critical concerns about fleet management, accountability, and access to emergency care, especially in rural districts such as Mangochi.
"These ambulances seem to have been grounded for so long. What happened that should not be repaired.," said Jobe reacted in an interview.
Taking to his Facebook page the musician described the situation as a public health crisis that demands urgent intervention.
He said : “Are all these ambulances dead in Mangochi? I have decided to go find a way to fix all. The people of Mangochi and surrounding areas seriously need the ambulances running,” was his post on Facebook page.
“Tomorrow I leave for Mangochi. I will fix them all, Insha Allah.”he added.
Images of the dilapidated ambulances, some stripped of tyres and vital parts, have circulated widely on social media which elicited worries and debate among Malawians.
One social media user, Mwiza–The Life Coach, commented: “Government knows how to buy good equipment but fails to maintain it. Most government drivers prefer repairing vehicles themselves to supplement their income through allowances. Otherwise, relying on salary alone is not enough.”
Amid the practical suggestions and frustrations, others turned to faith for strength.
Kakande Ministries Expeditions, a Ugandan-based religious group, offered spiritual encouragement: “May God’s love and guidance pave the way for breakthroughs in your life this Palm Sunday.”
The Ministry of Health is yet to issue a formal response on the status of the vehicles or the potential for collaboration with Namadingo.
Namadingo’s pledge has come at come at time when the country continues to grapple with logistical challenges in its health referral system.
And many people this is staution in many district hospitals and believe that if the artist succeeded in reviving the dormant fleet, it could breathe new life into the delivery of emergency services in one of Malawi’s busiest lakeshore districts.
