Reliving my father's past

Reliving my father's past By Kondwani Nyondo Mr. Phiri is our lecturer in Digital Media—or something close to that.  His course mostly covers internet usage in this digital era.  I’m not entirely sure, as I’m still new to this prestigious media training institution. I don’t know if he teaches at other colleges, but students here seem to enjoy his classes. They say he is friendly and engaging. For me, today is my first time meeting him in person.  We spoke on the phone a few days ago, and he sounded exactly as students described—amiable. I am in class C/1, which stands for Class 1 in the first semester.  Our class is combined with C/2. Phiri also teaches diploma students in D/1 and D/2. It’s Tuesday, 8:00 AM.  Most students are already seated in our sparsely filled classroom. As I walk in, heads turn. My late arrival has caught everyone's attention.  I quickly find an empty, worn-out desk and sit down. Next to me is a young girl, her small frame suggesting s...

Chilenga face backlash over remarks in parliament

Image
Chilenga's development claims spark controversy  By Kondwani Nyondo Chitipa South Member of Parliament, Werani Chilenga, has sparked controversy after attributing development projects in his constituency to the Tonse Alliance government, a claim the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) insists is misleading. Speaking in Parliament today during his response to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered in Parliament by president Lazarus Chakwera, Chilenga criticized the previous administration for failing Malawians. "If I say the previous government failed, I mean the DPP," he said.                                               Chilenga during parliament session However, his remarks were swiftly challenged by Leader of the House, George Chaponda, who accused Chilenga of distorting facts. Chaponda argued that some of the projects Chilenga praised the Tonse gove...

Current

Current Desk. Breaking News. UTM (United Transformation Movement) has announced it will not attend the launch of the Saulos Klaus Chilima Foundation scheduled for tonight at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe , where President Lazarus Chakwera has been invited as the guest of honor.  The party, led by Dalitso Kabambe , explained that the decision is in response to the unresolved grief over the tragic airplane crash last year that claimed the lives of their former vice president, Saulos Chilima , and others. During a press briefing on Monday in Lilongwe’s Area 49 , Kabambe said the party could not share a platform with the current government leadership.  He questioned how the party could do so when there are still unanswered questions about the crash and the current leadership’s failure to provide clarity.  "How do we share the platform with those who owe Malawians the truth?" Kabambe said. He,however, emphasized that the boycott was not a pr...

Tomatoes turn into ‘elusive red gold’ as prices soar By Kondwani Nyondo Tomatoes, a staple ingredient in Malawian households, have now become an expensive luxury, with prices soaring to unprecedented levels. Just a few months ago, a five-liter bucket of tomatoes cost K2,000, but now consumers are forced to dig deeper into their pockets, with prices reaching as high as K15,000 in some markets. Consumers have expressed frustration over the price surge, with many struggling to afford a commodity that was once readily available at affordable prices. “I used to buy a full bucket for just K2,000, but now even K5,000 can’t get me enough tomatoes for my business,” lamented Blandina Kamoyo, a Lilongwe-based restaurant owner. At Wakawaka Market, one of Lilongwe’s major agri-food trading centers, the same quantity is now selling for K14,000. Alinafe Banda, a tomato vendor, attributed the price hike to a severe shortage of the commodity. Banda selling her red gold She said, "We are struggling...
